2022 Year in Review

Overall 2022 was a very boring year for us financially.  Our retirement portfolio remained virtually unchanged (down 1.6%). Although this is definitely nothing to brag about we faired relatively well compared to the TSX (down 8.66%) and the S&P (down 19.4%). Despite the small decrease in our investment portfolio our net worth squeaked out a small gain of $19,414 due primarily to $16,000 of new money being added as well as a decrease in our liabilities on the rental properties.   ASSETS Contributions Made in 2022: $16,000 Retirement Portfolio: $685,363 (down $11,050) Rental Property #1: $130,000 (No change in 2022) Rental Property #2: $350,000 (No change in 2022) Rental Property #3: $300,000 (No change in 2022) Rental Property #4: $225,000 (No change in 2022) Total Retirement Assets: $ 1,670,605  (down $11,050) LIABILITIES : Rental Property Loan #1: $ 43,452  (down $3,206 in 2022) Rental Property Loan #2: $ 116,052  (down $8,622 in 2022) Rental Prop...

No major issues with the rentals and I increased the amount of one of my loan payment on the rentals to compensate for the dramatic rise in interest rates.   ASSETS. Although, there were a few minor issues that required a fair amount of my time, but not a large amount of my money. I also slightly increased the amount of 2 of my loan payment on the rentals to compensate for the dramatic rise in interest rates.   ASSETS. We didn't purchase or sell any equities and everything was quiet with the rentals. Despite the dismal performance of the stock market in 2022 our our dividend income is actually up 20% when compared to the same time period last year. This is encouraging as one of the pillars of our early retirement plan is dividend income. This gives some comfort that we'll be able to ride out the occasional bear market without cutting back our spending.  ASSETS Oct Contributions: $3000 Retirement Portfolio: $662,863 (UP $25,087 stock market appre...

Due to rapidly rising interest rates and deteriorating economic data it looks like we're surely headed for a recession. The question remains will the recession be shallow and brief or sharp and prolonged. Either way I will be staying 100% investing in equities and will adding to my positions in the coming months. The best time to buy has always been when things appear grim. ASSETS Sept Contributions: $0 Retirement Portfolio: $637,776 (down $35,937 stock market depreciation) Rental Property...
